LISTEN THE STUDENTS’ VOICE AND NEEDS

12/20/2011

My previous writing in this blog questioned our ability as teachers to continue influence students’ life in this techy environment where knowledge is available for any body. Because of the worl-encyclopedia knowledge is easily access by the students so that the gap in knowledge between teachers and students is narrow. This condition has eroded our power which is relied on our knowledge capacity. Since our power is on knowledge, how do we continue influencing students’ life?

This writing tries to reflect on some aspects which might help us to continue our responsibility in helping students to shape their life. First, the teachers’ life and expertise is one of the instruments to shape the life of the students. Second, listen and give space to students’ life and needs in our education process, in the program.

The teachers’ quality of life and their expertise are the source of influence in the life of the students. Rich experiences from the teacher and their skills in managing the information and how to interprete them meaningfully could encourage students to go deeper to their curiousity about their lives. Teachers should help students to manage and interprete the raw information which they gathered become meaningful information for their lives. Therefore, the teaching and learning in the classroom is not merely giving information to the students but also helping the students to understand how this information play role in their lives. Example: the use of social networking. The teachers could invite student to reflect how they have used the social networking. How do they take advantages from the social media networking and what are the disadvantages of using social networking in the daily life. From this reflection, students are encouraged to think deeper about their actions and to make necessary decision about the world around them.
The second aspect which needs to be considered in the process of education is the voice of the students. Students have a lot of needs which need to be addressed. They have opinion about what is good for their lives. They have a lot of questions to express and to be addressed together with the adult and their peers. They need the secure place to freely express their hope and worries withouth fear of being humiliated by the adult and their peers.

According to Kessler (2000) in her book The soul of education, young people need to deeply connected with the self, others, community, lineage, nature, a higher Power (p. 18-35). How do we teachers should adress these need of connection? How do we create situation that nurture the self-knowledge of the students. It is the challenge of the teachers and the school to really pay attention on this very basic need of the students. Our school nowdays is filled with many requirement to pass the exam such as National exam (in Indonesia) which force the teacher and the school to focus on the materials and not on the need of the students. Many times we ignored the students voice during the teaching and learning processes.
To be continued…
